Short Version: Posterous is a fantastically elegant way to maintain your online presence across multiple sites. Email once, post everywhere!

Long Version:

Lately, I’ve made the conscious decision to blog more and embrace the social web. In the past I’ve found this to be quite time consuming – especially trying to maintain my content accross multiple sites and networks. Yes, there are plently of ways to post to mulitple locations on the web. For example, ping.fm does just this – you post once and it’ll update everything for you. It’s good and it works. But my favourite is Posterous. Read on…

I value my time, a lot. Posterous saves me time. It lets you create a post via email, web or bookmarklet. Email is my preferred choice mainly because it’s always available. Wherever I am, the chances are that, at the very least, I will be able to get access to my email. And this is where the beautiful simplicity of Posterous kicks in. You send an email to post@posterous.com (super-easy to remember!). The subject line is the title/heading and the body of the email will form the main content of the post. If you post a link to rich media like a YouTube video or attach photos or videos, Posterous will automatically format your post to display the media. Immediately, your post will appear on your own Posterous blog and on every other social network or site they support: like Twitter, Facebook and Flickr to name a few (and the list keeps growing!)

You can’t change your blog appearance: there are no themes or customisation of any kind. This is so awesome. I really hope it stays this way! Posterous is clearly not meant to replace your main blog (although it could) and provides the perfect place to publish random thoughts, ideas and media that do not warrant a full-on blog post.

I’ve heard people say Posterous can be thought of as a place for posts longer than 140 characters. I agree with this. It’s perfect for adding value to your tweets for example, and beats TwitPic on features.

Posterous has plenty more useful features and time-saving tricks up its’ sleeve – but I just wanted to cover the basics here. Besides, you can discover Posterous for yourself!

Social network aggregation, and utilising available API’s, is the only viable way to update many sites without duplicating content manually. If you care about productivity, great content and getting things done, Posterous have nailed it!

I’m looking forward to how this great service develops. Also, their API will be very useful when it’s released! :P
