Two of my favourite productivity Mac applications are ShoveBox – for keeping tracking of random snippets – and Dropbox, for syncing my between my Mac’s and the cloud. However, currently ShoveBox does not support syncing, so here is a quick tip to get your ShoveBoxes on multiple Macs in sync. But first, some reasons why I love ShoveBox for storing random notes, snippets, bookmarks even whole web pages:

You can drag and drop pretty much anything onto the ShoveBox menubar icon

If the aforemention dropped object happens to be a URL, you will be given the option to bookmark it or save an archive of the whole page. Useful for interesting articles etc, that you want to keep or need to view offline.

It’s simple and elegant. All the best apps are :P

You can capture things from other sources such as your iSight camera or the clipboard.

The Quick Jot feature is perfect for filing away those random short-lived thoughts that crop up throughout the day – the ones you would otherwise forget!

Rules. You can apply rules to perform actions when certain conditions are met. For example, every new entry that includes the tag #work can be automatically filed into a Work category.

And Dropbox… Well, you have got to try it if you aren’t already converted. It is a very slick, very fast way of synchronising files between machines, as well as keeping a copy of them in the cloud. It is secure, simple, free and quite simply a must have for anyone who works across multiple computers.
The problem:

Currently you can not sync between computers or the cloud. I am sure this is something the developers are working on… but in the meantime here is a quick solution using Dropbox. It’s very simple and a bit of a hack, but works…

Move your ShoveBox Database file from ~/Library/Application Support/ShoveBox/ShoveBox Database to /[your Dropbox path]/Library/Application Support/ShoveBox/ShoveBox Database. Of course, this example requires that your create the Library, Application Support and ShoveBox folders in your Dropbox. I have set mine up like this to stay consistent with the folder structure on my Mac, but you could put the ShoveBox Database file anywhere in your Dropbox.

Open terminal and cd to your ~/Library/Application Support/ShoveBox/ShoveBox Database (which should now be empty because you have moved the ShoveBox Database file).

Create a symbolic link (a bit like a shortcut) using the ln -s command to point to the ShoveBox Database file at its new location in your Dropbox. This will create a link file in the place that ShoveBox expects to find its’ database, but actually link through to the real database file stored in your Dropbox. For example, type: ln -s ~/Dropbox/Library/Application\ Support/ShoveBox/ShoveBox\ Database Shovebox\ Database

Quit and restart ShoveBox.

Repeat for your other machines. But instead of moving the ShoveBox Database file from your local Libray, delete it, because you already have your database stored in your Dropbox.

This does not work flawlessly however. Unfortunately, ShoveBox only seems to write to its’ database upon exiting, and read from it upon launch. This means that to initiate the sync you will need to quit and relaunch ShoveBox on all machines before Dropbox will sync the database. But it is better than no sync at all and I hope this workaround helps someone. If you have any alternatives or better suggestions, please let me know in the comments.
